To provide a specification for 12.70 mm 9 track magnetic tape to enable mechanical and magnetic interchangeability of tape between information processing systems.

This Standard refers solely to magnetic tape for digital recording on which the direction of magnetization is nominally longitudinal as opposed to nominally transverse.
